City of Pittsburgh’s Pedestrian Safety Action Plan (2020)

Department of Mobility & Infrastructure

Role: Principal Planner of Active Transportation

Project Description:

The City of Pittsburgh’s Pedestrian Safety Action Plan (2020) aims to identify policy and infrastructure improvements to support Pittsburgh's mobility goals, including eliminating serious injuries and fatalities on city streets, ensuring access to fresh food within 20 minutes, making short trips enjoyable without cars, reducing household expenses on transportation, and reflecting city values in street design. Developed collaboratively by DOMI, FHWA, and local stakeholders, the plan outlines actionable steps to create a safe, accessible, and connected pedestrian network that enhances community well-being. It includes a detailed analysis of crash data, identifies high-risk areas, and specifies actions and metrics for ongoing performance monitoring.

Work on Project:

  • Contributed writing on Complete Streets pedestrian safety countermeasures and reviewed and approved final Plan draft.

  • Launch marketing and outreach campaign to introduce the Plan to the City, working with Safe Routes to School coordinator.

  • Held public meeting with 90+ attendees, local and national coverage, contributions from established Registered Community Organizations, the City’s Disabilities Task Force, etc.
