FHWA’s Equity in Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Trainings (2021-2022)

Project Description:

The Federal Highway Administration offers training courses to agencies in Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Focus States and Planning Organizations, focusing on equity in bicycle and pedestrian safety. These courses help agencies utilize local and national data to identify and address equity gaps through policy, planning, and engineering practices. Additionally, the training covers community safety and mobility needs, exploring risk factors, perceptions of safety, and obstacles to safe travel for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Work on Trainings:

  • Researched, drafted content, edited and refined two modules focusing on addressing historic inequitable actions in transportation planning and engineering and methods to eliminate these biases in current internal and external practices.

  • Summarized and created abridged literature reviews for all equity modules for participants’ further review.

  • Coordinated efforts and refined content additional content with stakeholder partners at Equitable Cities and the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
